Remember

I’ve been reading through the book of Numbers lately, and one thing that stands out is how often God reminds the Israelites of who He is. Take Numbers 15:41, for example: “I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God; I am the Lord your God.” In that single verse, God says it three times—I am your God. If there's one thing God knows well, it’s how forgetful His people can be.

Throughout their journey, the Israelites complain a lot. At one point, they’re even grumbling about the manna God is faithfully providing for them. In Numbers 11:5, they weep and say, “Who will feed us meat? We remember the free fish we ate in Egypt, along with the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic.” They were so desperate for something other than manna, they’d rather go back to slavery in Egypt than continue living in freedom in the wilderness!

And can I just say... I get it!! The wilderness is hard!

If you're in Christ, you’re also in the wilderness—freed from Egypt (sin and death), but still on the way to the Promised Land (becoming like Christ). And that journey is ANYTHING but easy.

At the point I’m reading, the Israelites have been in the wilderness for just about two years. Imagine their reaction if they found out they’ll be there for 38 more! I don’t even want to know how many years are left in my wilderness—honestly, if I’d known at the start everything I’d be asked to walk through, I might’ve thrown in the towel right then. This journey is long!

But here’s the incredible thing about our God: He is so patient with us. And He’s really creative in how He reminds us of who He is. Even on the days when “going back to Egypt” feels like a tempting option, look for those reminders. Look at how far He’s brought you. Look at all the ways He’s provided for you. Remember.

For He is the Lord your God, who set you free from sin and death to be your God.

He is the Lord your God.
